As we near the peak of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, one question on many minds is why it has been so quiet? About two-thirds of all Atlantic hurricane activity typically occurs between August 20th and October 10th. With only a handful of named storms and only one major hurricane through late August, the sluggish pace stands in stark contrast to what many seasonal forecasts had warned would be an active year. So, what's causing the delay? <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 073829-1756301920679.png">Several key factors are at play in this unusually slow start. First, the Main Development Region (MDR) of the tropical Atlantic, where most storms form during peak season, has been cooler than expected. While still slightly above average, it falls short of the record-breaking warmth seen in 2024. Meanwhile, waters in the subtropical Atlantic are significantly warmer, disrupting the usual energy gradient that helps fuel storm formation.Atmospheric conditions have also been unusually hostile to storms. Persistent wind shear across the Gulf and Caribbean has torn apart developing systems before they can organize. On top of that, the upper atmosphere has remained unusually warm and stable, effectively placing a lid on the kind of deep convection hurricanes need to grow. Add in frequent plumes of dry, dusty air from the Sahara, and the result is a storm-suppressing cocktail that’s kept the basin eerily calm.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 072548-1756301167707.png"><h1>Next Few Weeks</h1>However, do not let your guard down. All it takes is one hurricane to make it a memorable season. The tropics in the Atlantic have a chance to stay active through the first week of September. While a large-scale Kelvin Wave is not likely to spur activity like it has over the last two weeks, additional tropical waves could develop in the Atlantic and the Gulf/Western Caribbean. During this time of year, any development will need to be monitored closely.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-21 051407-1755774861734.png"><h1>Fernand</h1>As of now, Tropical Storm Fernand continues to churn out in the Atlantic as a lopsided storm moving to the northeast. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 063344-1756298038041.png">Anyone with European plans might want to monitor Fernand, because it's following in some eerily similar footsteps as Erin. Here's where Erin is ending up:<div class="twitter-tweet" style="display: flex; justify-content: center" data-twitt-post-id="1960166825234432478" src="https://x.com/CIRA_CSU/status/1960166825234432478"></div><h1>Eastern Pacific</h1>Tropical Storm Juliette is still spinning in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. It is going to make a run at becoming a hurricane over the next day or so, but should remain well enough offshore to stay harmless.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 063434-1756298085879.png">The Eastern Pacific has been pretty active again. THREE other areas of interest, aside from Juliette. None of these looks like they will threaten land, with the most unique being the one passing south of Hawaii. TROPICS: Fernand Spins Around Atlantic, Four Areas to Watch in the Pacific

Taban Sharifi grew up in Southern California between Los Angeles and San Diego. She is a Certified Broadcast Meteorologist (CBM) with the American Meteorological Society (AMS). She has a B.S. in Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Environmental Sciences with a minor in Environmental Systems and Society from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Go Bruins! While in school, Taban was a meteorology intern with NBC LA. There she helped forecast daily weather for the greater Los Angeles region and created a playbook to deploy weather sensors for NBC owned-and-operated stations across the country. Her first on-air job took her to San Angelo, Texas, where she was a morning meteorologist and co-anchor. Working in West Texas gave her knowledge and experience covering severe storms. From there, she moved to Palm Springs, California. People think forecasting in California is sunshine all the time, but with temperatures in the 120’s, wildfires, damaging winds, floodings, and earthquakes, the forecasting kept her very busy! She also worked there as a general assignment reporter and told community stories. Taban is excited for the challenge and opportunity to forecast nationally with WeatherNation. She also looks forward to exploring all that Colorado has to offer!

A strong Summer cold front knifed its way through the Northern Tier and Plains. Overnight lows have been dropping to record levels once again on Wednesday. More record low temperatures are possible through Thursday. A surge of Monsoon moisture is moving across the West, including CA, NV, and the Four Corners. Many areas are under flood watches through Wednesday night. Flash flooding is possible with the heavy rainfall, with up to two inches expected in a short period of time.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 080351-1756303447730.png">During July and August, we watch for surges of Monsoon moisture. During those months, steering winds turn southerly and bring in new moisture from the Gulf and Pacific.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-26 161945-1756246790250.png">Some of the storms that develop from the monsoon moisture can produce gusty winds and hail across Colorado.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 080532-1756303552985.png"><h1>Timing</h1>Daily rounds of t-storms with flash flood potential are likely through Thursday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/2025-08-27 08-04-40-1756303518578.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>The best time for storms will be with diurnal heating during our afternoons, but because so much moisture is in place, some morning and overnight storms will be possible. Monsoon Moisture Surges, Flood Risk From California to Colorado

Conditions in the Northwest have been hot and dry. The Flat Fire began on August 21st near Sisters, OR, and has grown to over 23,000 acres (above).There is a risk for isolated dry thunderstorms (with lightning and wind but very little rainfall) through Wednesday across the Northwest. Meaning, conditions are still dry at the surface, and with thunderstorms that form, the lightning can spark another fire.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 075554-1756302968058.png">Monsoonal moisture will be moving into the region, bringing some areas of relief, but also bringing flooding threats.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 075627-1756303010132.png">Flood Watches are in place through Wednesday.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 075704-1756303034856.png">A few inches of rain are looking likely, especially across portions of ID, WY, and MT. <img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/Screenshot 2025-08-27 075732-1756303064261.png">The bulk of the rain will be through Wednesday, although, some of it will continue into Thursday.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2025/08/2025-08-27 07-57-59-1756303126025.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video>More details can be found during your Western Regional Forecast :50 past the hour on WeatherNation.

Northwest: Fire Danger and Flooding

Originally born in Spokane, Washington,  Jackie's Dad was in the Air Force which led her to a life of travel. She has lived in Wichita, Okinawa, Japan, Baltimore, New Jersey, Indiana and South Carolina.  After graduating from Kadena High School, in Okinawa Japan, she got a full basketball scholarship to Coppin State College. On the court she was a 4-year starter and reached over 1000 points in her basketball career. She was also named Athlete of the Year for the whole university in 2002. Off the court, she earned a degree in Broadcast Production/English.

After college, she landed a job as a radio personality. Jackie went on to have a successful career for 12 years working at KXLY broadcast center. While on the radio, she decided to change career. Jackie went back to school, graduating from the Mississippi State Meteorology Broadcast Program. From snow, to tornadoes, to hurricanes, she has had experience forecasting all these events.

Upper-level high pressure will stay dominant over the western U.S., leading to dangerous heat and dry conditions (and wildfire risk). Heat alerts have come to an end for the southwest, but there are still some in the northwestern U.S.Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories remain in place across the Northwest, as temperatures are expected to run above average. Seattle has a forecast high of 88° on Tuesday, and normally averages 77°. Front Brings Storms to the Midwest and Front Range

Alana Cameron was born and raised in Canada in the city of Mississauga, just outside of Toronto. Alana is the oldest of 4 siblings, all close in age, and grew up playing outside with them in all types of weather. After graduating high school, Alana moved to study at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna for a year before transferring to Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics and Atmospheric Science. Upon completion, Alana moved back to Toronto where she completed a post-grad degree in Meteorology at York University. After her post-grad, she went on to complete another post-grad in Broadcast Journalism - TV News at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario. During her final year of studies she had the privilege of interning with the best in the business in Canada at The Weather Network. Once she finished her internship, she got the call from small-town Denison, Texas where she accepted a job as an on-air meteorologist at KTEN-TV, right in tornado alley, covering severe weather from Sherman/Denison (North Texas) to Ada (Southern Oklahoma). After the most active tornado season Oklahoma had seen in May 2019 (105 tornadoes!) Alana is excited to join WeatherNation to cover weather all across the nation. Severe weather is expected to continue into Monday morning from the Front Range of Colorado through the Plains of Oklahoma. The Storm Prediction Center has issued a SLIGHT risk (level 2 out of 5) across the front range of Colorado and New Mexico and into Texoma/the Red River Valley of Texas and Oklahoma through Monday morning.On Sunday, a daily rainfall record was broken in Garden City, Kansas due to locally heavy downpours.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/07/Screenshot 2024-07-07 191410-1720401299354.png">Severe storms from the Front Range to the Red River Valley are expected to lose some of their intensity with the loss of daytime heating, but some of these individual storms may continue to cluster together to produce heavy downpours, strong winds, and large hail.<video src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/07/7-07 18z plains-1720401347163.mp4" controls="true" width="100%"></video> Due to incoming storms and an increase in tropical moisture, flood alerts have been issued for portions of Oklahoma and Texas for potential flooding in these areas.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/07/Screenshot 2024-07-07 142438-1720383884966.png">Localized areas of rainfall may receive several quick inches according to our forecast model guidance.<img src="https://media.weathernationtv.com/app/uploads/2024/07/Screenshot 2024-07-07 191601-1720401378480.png">
